The IVD 2 and rf-IVD 2 systems are patient dose monitoring systems that use diode detectors for real-time dose readings. The IVD 2 is a wired system and rf-IVD 2 is a wireless system using technology similar to that used in cellular telephones. Both systems share the same basic architecture so they also share many features and components.
Both the IVD 2 and rf-IVD 2 store a temperature coefficient calibration factor to automatically correct for temperature fluctuations, which can alter readings when using diode detectors. When the radiation beam shuts off, the junction temperature is measured and the dose values are automatically compensated. The corrected measurement is displayed on the control module or PC.
Both IVD 2 and rf-IVD 2 systems are compatible with positive or negative output diodes.
Either system, IVD 2 or rf-IVD 2, can be configured to use the control module and thermal printer option or the included PC software. Each configuration uses the standard 4-channel Detector Pod to deliver real-time dose data to the control module or a PC.
The control module is located in the control area and can be connected to the compact (4” x 5”) thermal printer. The control module features a keypad with 12 energy buttons, each button can be used for a specific diode setup (measurement routine) and, if desired, can hold calibration factors for all four channels of the Detector Pod. Only one Detector Pod can be used with the control module. The control module also manages password protected physics functions. To Start a measurement, press an energy button. As dose is delivered, real-time dose data (with correction factor applied) is displayed on the control module screen. To stop a measurement, select the STOP button. The measured dose can be printed on the thermal printer for record keeping. The printer can be programmed to include facility name on the dose reports.
The PC Windows software is included with both the IVD 2 or rf-IVD 2 systems but its use is optional as the software is primarily designed for applications using more than 4 channels (1 Detector Pod) up to a maximum of 52 channels (13 Detector Pods). The software is a stand-alone interface so all functions carried out in the control module can be carried out in the PC software. The software offers straightforward operation with more options than the control module.
The PC software is designed to offer the following options: Control - Manage all IVD 2/rf-IVD 2 operations via an interface that offers added information. TBI - the rf-IVD 2 can be expanded up to 13 detector pods (52 channels) when used with the software. This makes it ideal for IMRT diode in phantom measurements and TBI measurements. PC Printouts - Use the printer connected to the PC to print measurements for record keeping.
The rf-IVD 2 uses a rf-transceiver to transform the regular IVD measurement (detector) pod into a wireless device. The rf-IVD 2 system has two identical and interchangeable wireless measurement pods that communicate with each other via radiofrequency. The measurement pod that sits on the treatment couch and is connected to the patient diodes to measure the dose is called the Detector Pod. The Pod that receives the wireless dose data is called the Base Station Pod. This Pod rests in a wall-mounted charging bracket which also holds and charges the Detector Pod when not in use. The Base Station Pod relays the dose data, via hardware, to the control module or PC. The rf-IVD 2 system has been thoroughly tested with no signal interference from rf-energy in the treatment room. The line of sight does not need to be maintained for the rf-pods to communicate.
The standard rf-IVD 2 system is a 4 channel (1 Detector Pod) wireless system but can be used as a 8 channel (2 Detector Pods) wired system by using the Base Station Pod as a Detector Pod and the PC software.
If the rf-IVD 2 is expanded to up to 13 Detector Pods / 52 channels each Detector Pod communicates with the same Base Station wirelessly thus enabling multi-channel applications with clean and efficient wire management.
System Configuration
The typical configuration for a complete system, assuming use of 3 diodes, medium, high and electron energies, would be as follows: Detector Pod - both IVD 2 wired or rf-IVD 2 systems Base Station Pod - rf-IVD 2 system Control Module - both IVD 2 or rf-IVD 2 systems (can only be used with one Detector Pod) PC Software - when more than 4 channels (1 Detector Pod) are used - up to a maximum of 52 channels (13 Detector Pods). Thermal Printer - for printouts when using the control module.
